WILLIAMS PULLS OUT OF TITLE DEFENCE AGAINST CHISORA

E-mail Print PDF

Danny Williams has withdrawn from his British Heavyweight title defence against Derek Chisora at Wembley Arena on February 13 claiming that he has a viral infection.

Promoter Frank is now in talks with two boxers who hold wins over Williams to face Chisora instead on the huge Night of the Champions show.

Williams caused confusion last week when after accepting to fight Chisora - who replaced the injured Sam Sexton - he then failed to turn up at a press conference to announce the Chisora bout, leaving his manager Micky Helliet to say that Williams "needed some time to get his head around the change".

However, Williams confirmed last Friday that he was going ahead with the fight against the unbeaten puncher from Finchley.

Now Williams has once again disrupted the Night of the Champions event that features the future of British boxing all on one big show including James DeGale, Frankie Gavin, Kevin Mitchell and Nathan Cleverly.

Promoter Frank Warren, who has had plenty of experience dealing with Williams and his mood swings, said, "It's very disappointing and frustrating after last weeks antics for Danny to once again pull out of the fight leaving Derek in the lurch,"

"I'm just sorry for Derek who has trained his heart out for his British title opportunity and has had it scuppered - and remember that Williams didn't want to fight him when I tried to make the fight last year,"

"I am working hard for Derek who will still feature on the Night of the Champion show and the two boxers I am negotiating with have beaten Danny already,"

"I said last week that Danny should vacate the title or retire if he didn't want to fight him,"

He added, "The Night of the Champions features the best in young talent that I promote like Derek, Nathan Cleverly, Kevin Mitchell, James DeGale, Frankie Gavin, Billy Joe Saunders, Jamie Cox, and the Walsh brothers and it will a fantastic night showcasing the future of British boxing."

  1. Oh dear this night might have to be renamed. Where is the sell for this night now? Mitchell and Cleverly fighting complete nobodies. No kell brook, the olympians fighting more punch bags and the heavyweight headline match a reserve v a reserve.

Anyone silly enough to pay these prices with these crazy booking fees needs there head read. I feel sorry for all those with tickets already. Disgraceful value for money. When it comes to boxing that really is saying something.
  2. hearing alot of noise on other websites that fury may step into this 1...i really hope so, no point in protecting either of them, neither are exactly going to become iron mike tysons are they, or anything near that calibur!!!.... despite fury sharing his name and chisora sharing his taste buds!

Stephen smith, clevva's, mitchell, frankie G and billy joe my picks for real stardom on the world stage someday, with a few other notable talents in franks stable that have a shout 2! exciting times for british boxing!
  3. if only martin rogan wasnt injured frank warren wud have gave him a shot because at the end off the day he puts bums on seats. williams should be striped of his title Chisora is the only british boxer to be going places. sam sexton is rubbish !
  4. 'let their injuries heal and fight a month or so later in the year'..........

I wouldn't class williams 'virus/cold' as an injury... its more like he doesnt want to fight someone who he has no chance against and not for the first time in his career he is backing out on a suspect reason.

If anything it should be danny vacating his title and letting chisora fight sexton... Chisora has already beaten sexton... so he should have as much of a chance as him to fight for the title...

I will be happy to see chisora beat skelton for the english title instead though for 13th Feb.
  5. option 1... Sexton vs Williams in a few mnts end ov March...
chisora vs skelton should be back on the bill after all i bet iva has been outa the gym, so there both in training
and winner gets to face the above winner..
Sexton deserves a shot b4 chisora...
i say let there injurys heal and fight a mnt or so later in the year...
let chisora n skelton get it on 4 english like planned..
p.s and skelton is so gonna smash him..

    problem solved...
  6. Williams should have fought Chisora and beat him, even with the lack of training as a result of the infection. Chisora got put down in sparringby Leon Williams, who is a cruiserweight who recently got beat by Hastings Rasani!
  7. Danny may had thought he had a chance against sexton... but he would have had no chance against Chisora, who would have knocked him out with ease... if he doesn't vacate the title now he is making a mockery of the sport and the professionals that actually fight to defend their titles.
  8. williams should vacate hes only holding others back as he knew he would lose. give it up danny your a loser
  9. Danny Williams is an absolute joke.
